What is a Non-Immigrant ED visa?
Non-Immigrant ED is for foreigners who enter Thailand to study or join an education programme recognised by the state. It is not a tourist visa. After entry, stay is set by the immigration stamp; long-term study usually needs extensions tied to the school’s confirmation.
Do I actually have to attend classes on an ED visa?
ED is issued for real study. Using it only to stay, without studying, is a high-risk case. The consulate or Immigration may ask for proof of the programme, the school, payment and actual attendance.
Can I work legally on an ED visa?
Work for a Thai employer on an ED visa is not allowed. ED is not a Work Permit. Remote income from abroad is not an official ED work authorisation. If the purpose is remote work without study, DTV is the category designed for that.
Must I keep money in a Thai bank for an ED visa?
For a first ED filing, Immigration may ask for proof of funds; a statement from a bank in another country is often accepted. For later extensions the school letter is often the main guarantee, and a Thai-bank balance is not always required. The office decides.
Can I switch from ED to DTV inside Thailand?
No. DTV is not converted from ED inside the country. The applicant must leave Thailand and file through e-Visa or a mission abroad; the e-Visa system checks that the applicant is outside Thailand.
What documents are typically needed for ED?
Typical list: passport, photograph, visa form, enrolment letter, school registration, Ministry of Education documents where required, the study programme, and proof of tuition if the mission asks. Financial evidence is added if the consulate requires it.
